Backups of MPP have a significantly smaller file size (MSP 2013 Standard, Win10)

I have typically been making backup copies of MMP files by using File Explorer to copy the file and then rename c/w adding the current date to the end of the filename.

However, I have now started using a different method. I am now using the MS Project ‘SaveAs’ function and adding the current date to the end of the filename.

What I have noticed is that the file size of the Backup MPP file created using the “SaveAs” function is smaller than the original file size. Smaller by ~50% in the case of the MPP file I am currently work with… from 4,719 KB to 1,982 KB. Using the File Explorer method the Backup is the exact size as the original.

All Backups appear to function properly.
I have tested on other MPP and some reduce in size and some do not. All files and stored on a network file server.

Does ‘SaveAs’ perform something similar to a “Compact and Repair” function that is found in MS Access?

Has anyone else noticed this and can offer an explanation?

Hi Keith, I don’t have a Microsoft sponsored answer but might provide a thought. If it is an actively running project, your timephased data will change to accommodate. Daily records are added as the assignment changes either from entering time or general modifications, and that could create inactive records. A save as might be smart enough to create those and other records more efficiently. Again, just a thought but I might guess that someone has a more official answer.
