Can anyone share any tips, etc. with managing programs in Project Server 2010? Master project with embedded subprojects? Individual projects tied together with a common Project Information  field?  What about project sites (individual vs one for the program)? Reporting Issues and Risks on a program vs project level? Curious to know what has worked and what hasn’t worked, any other advice for managing programs… Thanks!

Me too!! We have one Programme running with sub projects and another using linked milestones – not sure which is best at the moment. Interested in the concept of linking project information – how does that work?

We set up generic/non-employee EPM users in Project Server 2007 — like administrator”, “project manager”, “tester” and “developer” to use in initial project planning. Now that we’ve migrated to Project Server 2010, I can no longer see those users in my PWAServer SettingsManage Users list. However, these generic resources are still out there somewhere because we can still choose them from the “Build Team from Enterprise” EPM list in Project 2010.Are these generic users stored somewhere else in PWAServer Settings? How do I find them to make any edits? Thanks much.”

      Laurel,

My guess is that these were setup as Generic Resources”, than Generic “Users”. If that is correct, then you will find them in “Resource Center”.

if they were set up as Generic Users, for some reason, then you will need to go to Resource Center, confirm they are not Generic, and then make sure the option box “resource can log on to Project Server” is checked.

The answer is very dependant on how you manage your programs and what reporting data you need for governance of the projects and programs of projects. So create a top down list of all reports needed and their data, then look at how to collect and collate that data in Project. Some reports will work well in Proejct, others will work better after formatting in Excel.

The basics suggest you need to have a program custom field at the project level so its easy to create Views in PWA for a program. Project dependancies work for inter-project links.

One organisation’s solution is another organisation’s nightmare! So work thru your Program processes and governance needs first, then work out teh solution that works best for you. Look for low hanging fruit first and evolve your solution. There are rarely any silver bullets out there!
