    I’m using Project Professional 2016. My confusion is with the File/Options/Schedule settings. My clients company has a 7 hour working day. I’ve changed the defaults in the Schedule settings to 7 hrs per day and 35 hrs per week with 20 days a month. I created a new base calendar which also reflects these settings and I’ve applied that calendar to the project.Now if I add a task with 10 days duration and assign a work resource, I correctly see that the Resource Usage is 70 hours.

    Is this the correct sequence to follow? If I don’t change the default schedule settings I seem to be getting really weird resource usage results.
    Could some advise on the impact of the default schedule settings? Is it best to change these settings and change the project calendar to reflect the actual working conditions on the project?

    Dave, yes to did exactly what you are supposed to. The reason for the default schedule settings is to translate what you key into the schedule. It uses these settings instead of the calendar depending on what you are doing. If you enter a task with a one month duration, Project knows how many days to assign. If you enter a resource and give him/her 1 week, Project knows how many hours to assign. Hope that helps…

    Thanks for your response Larry. So are you saying that, in effect, the Project Calendar will always be overridden by the default schedule settings?
    If I leave the default settings at 8 hours per day, but change the Project Calendar to 7 hours per day, the work calculation will be based on the default of 8 hours per day. If I enter a task duration of 1 day it will be 8 hours in duration, even if the Project Calendar is set to a 7 hour work day.

    Dave, I totally understand the confusion. Let me try some other examples. Some companies do 4×10 hour days. Some companies do 4×9’s and then a 4 hr Friday. When you say that a task is one day, which day are you telling Project to use? What if your weekly schedule changes? What if it’s swing shift, what about 50, 50, 20 hour weeks? Every month has a different number of working days, and in a 4×10 work week it’s even less. Project needs a consistent number to return an entry of 1 day, 1 week, 1 month…and the calendar doesn’t provide that consistency. Hope that helps…

    You are correct Murphy. File/Option/Settings is to set the conversion rules for days to hour, weeks to days, months to days. When the duration and work values of tasks, resources and assignment is other than hours, Project converts that the values to hours using these conversion rules. These converted hours of duration are spread across days by using Project calendar. In your example, File/Option/Settings you have set the conversion rule for 1 day to 7 hours and Base calendar (set as Project calendar) is Mon-Friday, 9 am – 1 pm, 2 pm – 5 pm (7 hours). So, when you enter the duration is 2 days, the duration set internally is 2 x 7 hours = 14 hours. Then 14 hours is spread across two days using the Project Calendar. Hope this helps.

    I have been wrestling with this same problem, as my company works a 9/80 work two week work schedule. We work (4) 9 hour days, and hours on Friday. The following week we work (4) 9 hour days with Friday off. I agree with the answer that consistent number to return 1 day, 1 week, 1 month. This seems like the best way to handle this.
