After deleting the “add a new column” in error, the “unavailable” column shows up in print preview or printed copy. I tried to copy the “Add a new column” from another project to restore it, but it enters it as a text field. I tried another view – but that didn’t work either. Does anyone know how to remove this phantom column and restore the “add a column”? I have looked on line to see if others have answered this issue, but found nothing.
Interesting – I first did a print preview and the “add a new column” did not appear in the report. Then I hide the column and got the same results. However, when I tried in insert a column into the table, nothing happened and the column would not insert. I then closed the file without saving changes and it would still not allow me to insert a column. A new file would let me insert a column.
I think you might have found a bug – I will run it up the ladder and see what they can do. I am running 2010 Pro SP1.
FYI – there is not a column called “add a new column”. To follow up my direct email is firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you for writing.
Thanks Ellen. I am running SP1 patched up to the Aug 2011 CU. I will watch for your findings.
The conclusion is that you have a corrupt view. Try opening a file that has the add new column” in the view that isn’t working. Go into File –> Info –> Organizer and copy the good view from the file that works into your Global.mpt. Then close the good file and open the corrupt one and see that that fixes the problem with the view.
If it is happening on multiple views in the file, copy the tasks and paste a new blank file.
Hope this helps.

When you hover your mouse pointer over the column name unavailable, does it say it is a text field? I do not have a column called unavailable so i have to assume this is a column you created in inserted into a table. It is not a column value in the software. If you type any name while hovering over the add new column field, it automatically creates a column.
What does it say when you hover your mouse pointer over the unavailable column??
Please send me the file – email@example.com and let me take a look at it. Thanks.
I cannot hover on a print preview. The “unavailable” column only appears when I do a print preview. It gets inserted between the finish date and owner columns. It is like a phantom field that only appears when I try to do a print of the file. Strange.
