When a duration of a task is 1 day, MS Project and the task has dependency and on Auto Schedule, MS Project is not consistent in the way it has the Start date and Finish date. Example:
Task Name | Duration | % Complete | Start | Finish |
Task 1 | 1 day | 0% | Mon 4/2/12 | Tue 4/3/12 |
Task Name | Duration | % Complete | Start | Finish |
Task 2 | 1 day | 0% | Tue 3/6/12 | Tue 3/6/12 |
How can you Fix this problem and make it Start and Finish Dates in a consistent manner (Task 1 or Taks2), and why is it MS project doing this?
I think Task 1 is starting some time later than 8 AM on 4/2/12 ( assuming standard settings).
Insert the Times along with dates, and that should give you a clue. (File >> Options >> General >> Date Format)

Here is what I found ,
When you want the task to finish the next day, go to options , set the defualt from 8:00 to 5:00 , eneter 9 hours per day , enter 45 hours per week, enter 20 days per month , next go to the calendar , enter 8:00 to 12:00 then 1:00 to 5:00.
otherwise the task will end the next day .
Cheers
Sorry Correction
Here is what I found ,
When you want the task to finish the same day, go to options , set the defualt from 8:00 to 5:00 , eneter 9 hours per day , enter 45 hours per week, enter 20 days per month , next go to the calendar , enter 8:00 to 12:00 then 1:00 to 5:00.

Rick has the right approach to start with. I wouldn’t change the calendar for the sole purpose of attempting to land a one day task on the same day. This will have consequences throughout your project.
Hello Asim,
I can’t reproduce the issue. Have you updated the product ? If possible, pls send me the mpp file and a snapshot of the screen at projectuser[at]fastmail.fm. I’ll check and post feedback.
Regards.
You might want to check you default calendar settings to make sure you are working standard hours (8 AM to 5 PM). I would also suggest checking your project options to toggle the task type between fixed work and duration to see if that makes a difference. If neither of those fix the issue, then I would suggest looking at the details of each of the two tasks to see if the settings are the task level are different (ie one is effort driven, one uses a different calendar, etc.).
A strong possibility is that somewhere in your path one or your tasks has more or less than an 8 hour day. These can push part day durations to later tasks due to your dependencies.
