      Hi,

I have to manage earned value (as I understand it, basically keep track of whether people are on schedule or not for data programming and analysis tasks) on a project. What is the best way to manage earned value for knowledge work?

I was hoping MS Project Server might have an automated email system that could let staff automatically update their task status, but I don’t think it does. Any other ideas?

      Thanks!

Daniel, I read your question and have a couple of thoughts. First, you say that you have to manage earned value, and then say that you need to make sure people are on schedule. You can track people without using EV but assume you understand your options. As far as entering time against task status, Project Server is a good solution. But, you are correct that their isn’t a configurable solution. There are options available from simply creating a distribution list to a custom report. You can also create audit reports and reports on time entered. You need to figure out your compliance strategy, but the key is that Project Server does provide the functionality.
      Hope that helps…

      Hi Larry,

Thank you. This gets me started on the right track.

Just to clarify, I may have used the incorrect term. One issue is individuals tracking their progress towards completion of activities accurately, and I think that ultimately we want to do it via their own estimates (mainly given that it is knowledge work).

This being the case, my attention goes to ‘what is the most user friendly (on their end) way to achieve this?’. I began looking into SharePoint syncing with MS Project, and each individual having a task list on SharePoint that they can update (and then I can sync in MS Project), seems relatively reasonable. Would you still recommend MS Project Server for greater user friendliness for those that will be updating their tasks’ status?

      Thanks!

Good question, and a typical answer that it is based on what you need. I’ll provide a more detailed answer in your other question as it is more focused.

Thanks Larry; I followed-up in the other thread. With your assistance I’ve learned so much faster than I otherwise would have. I appreciate it!
