      Hello Sir/Madam,

I would like to kindly ask you to help me with error which I am getting while trying to SAVE Muster project. The muster project contains 10 sub projects.
      Here is the error:

      PROJECT CANNOT ACCESS THE FILE.
      TRY ONE THE FOLLOWING:
THE FILE MAY BE TEMPORARLY OPENED BY ANOTHER PROGRAM, WAIT A MOMENT, AND THEN TRY AGAIN
A FILE WITH THE SAME NAME MAY ALREADY EXIST. SAVE IT WITH DIFFERENT FILE NAME
YOU MAY BE TRYING TO SAVE TO A READ -ONLY FOLDER. SAVE TO A DIFFERENT FOLDER INSTEAD.

please be advised that non of above shown cases are exists. I also save MUSTER Project with different name however still the same issue. Also moved the whole folder from server to my laptop drive , but no success.
Please also NOTE that the single sub project works and save info without any error when I opened them separately.

Your help and support are appreciated on this matter.

      Thanks a lot in advance

Ramil, Odd issue for sure. I assume you are not using a shared resource pool. It also implies that you know what project it is having an issue with. I might try removing the project from the master, saving it, and then adding it back in. At this point it is a trial and error. Hope that helps…

      Dear Larry,

Thank you so much for your first comments and help.
To be honest I have shared resource pool which I share from one of the sub -projects.
The interesting point is that while MS project gave error it still saves the information which I added recently.
Do you think if I cancel shared resource this will stop error?

      Thanks a lot

      Dear Larry,

First of all let me thank you. As I am newborn on MS project probably I need more detailed advise which you tired to explain me above.
Please be advised that I am using shared resource pool from my MUSTER project and one of the SUB project file has resource names.
Also strange thing is that despite of error the MS project still saves information which I added previously. And somehow in CALCULATION option is turned OFF (don’t sure how) which means I have to go to Options section to changes settings everytime when I am opening file after file crash.

Your help and support are appreciated.
      Thanks again

Ramil, the hard fact is that you are doing too much if you are new to Microsoft Project. Very basic rule with shared resources is to save them in one location and do not move or save as a different name. I would check your resource pool and see what projects are being shared with it. My guess is that the project in question was shared at one point, renamed or replaced, and can no longer be accessed.

This may be a long shot answer.
Our org found that the number of sub-projects that can be linked to a master is based on the size of the individual project schedule names. Project appears to concatenate the names together into one field and if the total length of all the names exceeds the field length, you start getting open errors. Basically, the longer the project schedule names, the less of them you can link into a master.
You can confirm or rule this out rather simply. Either create a master and add each schedule to it one by one, opening and closing with each new sub-project…or try disconnecting sub-projects one by one from the master and opening/closing after each removal. If it starts working fine with only 8 sub-projects for example, then the problem might have been exceeding the field size that stores all the sub-project names.
Like I said, it’s a long shot, but our org found we could realistically link between 5 and 10 sub-projects before we started getting errors.

Good day Mr. Christofaro & Mr. Deffler,

      Thanks a lot for help.
I followed both of your comments: first (for now) I removed all resource pool sharing from sub-projects , then I changed names to shorted version. Now Muster file works fine.

      Appreciated for your support.
      Kindly
