I have a recent issue that has popped up where the Flag1 column is automatically inserted into whichever table I am viewing when I open a new or existing project file. This is happening in both MS Project 2010 Professional and MS Project 2013 Professional. I can see the field being inserted, and it still happens even when macros are disabled. Any idea why this might be happening and how to get it to stop?

      Thanks!

Megan, hard to tell how that happened but I assume your global table got updated somehow. I’m not sure how comfortable you are with updating the global but I’ll toss out some general steps here. There are also lots of blogs and videos that can help.
      1. Launch Project with the one blank (Project1) project open, then and go to a view that contains the Flag1 field. Note the name of the table (The Gantt Chart view should connect to the Entry table).
      2. Remove (hide) the Flag1 column
      3. Go to File ribbon, Info, and Organizer. You should notice the Global.MPT on the left and Project1 on the right
      4. Select the Tables menu, select the table in question (like the Entry table) and then select to copy it to the Global side (select to replace).
Hopefully that should work. If not then feel free to reply with what you are getting and we can work on it. Thanks…

      Megan,
Not knowing your level of familiarity with MS Project views and how they are constructed, this sounds like something that frustrated me when I first started using the tool. Project views are comprised of several components, one of which is the Table. The table component of the view contains all the columns displayed on the left side of a view. A Table can be shared across many views. For example, View1 thru View5 may use the Entry table. If you open View3 and decide to add the Flag1 column to View3, you are in essence modifying the Entry table used across Views 1 thru 5. Now, when you open View1, View2, View4, or View5, you also see the Flag1 column added. Any changes to the shared Table such as reordering columns, sizing columns, changing column headings and so on will now appear in any View that uses that Table.

      Larry,

Thank you very much for your detailed advice and steps to update the global template. I followed them exactly, saved the project file, closed project, then reopened project and the Flag1 field was there again! It seems like something is overriding even the global template.

This is especially concerning since it is across project files. We have another user in our organization who is experiencing the same problem. He also tried the steps to update the global template for the Entry table, and had the same lack of resolution.

      Any other ideas?

      Daryl,

Thank you for your response. I am a fairly advanced MS Project user, but there are still things that surprise me about the software. I am familiar with the tables within views and I think the issue is with the Entry view. Even after updating the Entry view to NOT include Flag1 and copying it to override the Global template, I am still experiencing the issue. Any other ideas?

Are you connected to Project Server? If this is happening with multiple users then that leads me to Project Server. Another option is to rename your global and let Project create a new one. Go to: C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MS Project\14\1033 (the number 14 is for 2010 and may be different depending on the version you are using). Rename the Global file. There may also be one or many folders inside the Cache folder. Delete all of them as well. Then open Project again and see if that solves your problem. Hope that helps…

I am not connected to Project Server. We have used it in the past, but have not connected in at least 1 year and this issue has only come up in the past couple weeks. So, I don’t think Project Server is the issue.

I tried the process of renaming the global, and it did not seem to work. When I went back into the files, I did not see a new Global. Should Project have created a new global? (I renamed it to Old_Global. When I went back into look, it looked like the Old_Global was recently updated, but it did not have a new file named Global.)

      Thanks again for your ideas!

Hi Megan, unfortunately I’m kind of at a loss. I’ve always known Project to create another Global, and that global is always the default. I’m grasping at straws here but you could try moving the global out completely. If that doesn’t work try repairing Project in Control Panel / Programs and Features. You said you have Project 2010 and 2013. This should be fine, but try doing these steps concurrently to both versions. Maybe remove a version, delete all the associated folders for that version, do the above, and try again. Maybe it’s a bug between versions that you’ve hit on. I wish I could help more…??

Megan, to concur with Larry above, I’m grasping here. Not knowing if you’ve tried this already…
There is an option in Project > Advanced that says “Automatically add new tables, filters…to global”. When this is checked, any NEW table, view, filter that is NOT in the global will be copied there. Once the view, table, filter is in the global, it will no longer automatically copy changes into the global. You must manually move changes to the global.
Lets assume you had an Entry table, modified it to add Flag1, and saved it to Global. Later in Project 1, you open a view using the Entry table and remove Flag1 column. You now have a version of Entry table in Global with Flag1 and in the local schedule not containing Flag1. In the current schedule, opening that view using Entry table would not show Flag1 because Project will use the local table first. But if you open a new schedule not containing it’s own version of the Entry table and open a view that uses the Entry table, Project will grab the Entry table from Global and the Flag1 field will look like it reappears.
The only thing I can suggest is to access organizer and move an Entry table configured as you want it into your Global and replace the version that is in Global.
One other random thought which may be irrelevant based on the number of days this has been in the discussion board, but I’ll mention it anyway since I always get caught on this. A new version of Global is only loaded when you start PRO. So after saving changes to the Global, shut down PRO and open PRO again to load the new version of Global.
