Hello. I am using MS Project Server 2013. I am working with a division of our business that wants to utilize mater projects. I have tested and I can successfully create the master project and its sub-projects in Project Server just fine. The question has been posed to me “can the sub-projects have their own project manager assigned in a master project as well as their being a master project manager?” Can anyone tell me if this scenario is possible in Project Server with master projects and if so, have you used the feature before?

My gut feel is that it can’t be done the way they want because it would allow multiple people to update the same plan. I look forward to your responses.

Randy, you can certainly have PMs responsible for sub-projects separate from the Project Manager responsible for the master project. You did mention the one caveat, but Project Server prevents this from happening. I might assume (at least in most cases) that it is the sub-projects that are opened and managed more often than the master project. If you want/need to open the master project and all sub-projects, you can pretty easily see if they are already checked out. In short, if you need to then give it a go.

Thanks Larry. Luckily I have a test environment in which to try this. Does this mean that the subprojects also have to be published in addition to the master project being published?

Yes, I believe the sub-projects need to be published in order to be inserted into a master. Sorry, it’s been a while.

      Hi Larry,

I did have to publish the sub-projects in order to insert them into the master project. That worked perfectly. What I am struggling with now is that once the sub-projects are inserted into the master project, they no longer are available to me to select in the Project Center; I can only see the newly created master project. How can I get to the individual sub-projects in PWA to assign individual owners of the sub-projects?

      Hi Randy,

Its been a while since you posted this question. You might have found the solution by now, if not then here it is. You have to select the subproject option in the project ribbon in project center view.
