      Hi,

      MS Project Online 2016

I cant solve one or more overallocation. I use MPUG resource leveling cheat sheet settings.

The funny thing is, when I change the settings from week by week to day by day, everything is just fine.

      Can someone please explain why?

      Kennet;
Based on what you’ve indicated, here’s what I think is happening.

When you specify week by week, project looks at the overall weekly allocation. While we people think that might result in 8, 8, 8, 8, 8 hours each day, in reality, it could end up with 16, 16, 0, 8, 0. On the weekly level, the resource is not over allocated because it did not exceed 40 hours. But there are days where the resource is allocated double and days where the resource is not allocated at all.

When you select day by day, project makes certain the daily allocations don’t exceed 8 hours. So the previous example of 16, 16, 0, 8, 0 becomes 8, 8, 8, 8, 8.
In the broad scope of things, both end up with the same result being 40 hours per week.

      Thanks Daryl,

I understand what you are saying, but I still dont understand why Project cant level the plan with the setting “Week by Week” or “Month by month” but it can when I change the setting to “Day by day” or “Hour by hour”?

Hope you will give it another shot 🙂

I’m not sure I’m clear on what you mean by “Project can’t level…”. Are you getting error messages during the leveling process?
      Can you provide more details.

One thing I will add, is that specific task types can negate leveling. Rather than trying to explain it here, I’m going to suggest the following article. I know the author so I think he’ll be OK with me referencing it. 🙂
      https://www.mpug.com/articles/resource-leveling-leveling-hierarchy-part-1/

There is a part II to that article coving the rest of the leveling hierarchy and in both articles, examples of scenarios are provided that illustrate how project might not actually level specific tasks.
And BTW, these are part of a 13 article series on leveling also accompanied with 2, 1 hour webinars if you want to dig a lot deeper into leveling.

Feel free to provide more details on “Project can’t level”.

Sorry if I didnt explain myself clearly enough. YES, I´m getting an error message when during the leveling process. The message says: “Project cannot solve the overallocation of “Ole” on Tue 01-05-2018″

So, I get an error message during the leveling process when the timeframe is set to “week by week” and I dont get an error message during the leveling process when I change the timeframe to “Minute by minute”

I´m very well familiar with your 13 articles about the leveling process. Much appreciated by the way 🙂
