I’m in an organization new to MS Project, who has MS Proj 2007 Professional.   I want to configure calendars so that a resource can be assigned a 4 hour and a 6 hour calendar.  Yes….. I know I can do that in the Resource Sheet view (50% 75%) BUT–it show the percentages on the Gantt.  And yes… I know I can change the name to the initials….but they want the names AND they want the “non productive” time to calculate at 50% and 75% respectively.
But what I WANT to do in 2007 Prof was something that was EASILY done in 2003.
I see two sets of directions.  They BOTH work if I want to make a four hour calendar…… but it WON’T let me make a 6 hour calendar.  This is what I have tried so far.
Option 1.  At the resource sheet, double click the resource  (Bob) on the resource sheet, get the Resource Info window, and click change working times, and you get the  “Change Working time for Bob” window.  Click work week, details, highlight M-F and remove the second item from the 8-12  and 1-5… so they only work in the mornings.   I could ALSO do it the old way, by going into the calendar, making a 4 hour calendar.
BUT– when I try to make a six hour calendar, it will NOT let me put in the second line of 1:00 PM   3:00 PM.    It either won’t “take”  or it will go from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, resist any attempts to change it to 3:00 PM.     I also deleted both items and tried to make one item of 8:00 to 2:00 PM and it wouldn’t work.  This looks suspiciously like a bug, which given how mature MS project is, I would suspect there is a workaround.
The reason I WANT this is I want the resources to be at 50% and 75% (and I want it to calculate), but I DONT WANT it to show the percentage.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!
      Thanks in advance!!

Those steps work as described and I’ve never heard of not being able to enter a time when entered correctly.  I even tried it and it worked as you describe it doesn’t.  I changed the 5 to a 3 and everything worked as expected.  Do you have the most recent updates?  Not sure what else to tell you but if you want to send me your plan I can take a look using my version.

THANK YOU Larry…. I sent you the Gantt, but because of your statements I now have permission to install SP1 and SP2 and the Security Patch from the Microsoft Website.

Neil, thank you for the example.  That helped to better understand the problem.  What I found is that the timephased information is accurate to the calendars (which you may already know). Carol physically takes 2 days to complete her task of 8 hours. The problem is the duration field itself. The duration is based on the physical duration of the work performed and the hours per day on the calendar tab of the project options.
Example: Task two has Carol assigned only and shows 1, 8 hour day (4 hours on day 1 and 4 on day 2). If you add Larry for 8 hours you get a duration of 1.5 days (one 8 hour day from Larry and a second 4 hour day). If you change Larry to 16 hours you get a duration of 2 days (8 hours each for two days). The calendar tab says to use 8 hours per day, which is what is being calculated.
I don’t have 2003 so I don’t know the difference between the two versions.

SOLUTION to 6 hour calendar create problem.  Larry, thank you AGAIN for all of the threads of assistance.
The problem: MS Project would not allow me to change the TO time from 5:00 PM to 3:00 PM (M-F) making a six hour calendar.  I tried highlighting the 5 and typing a 3, and deleting the line and typing 3:00 PM ….. nothing worked.
SOLUTION:   if you want to change a time from the default, say 5:00 PM to 3:00 PM, you do the following:   You delete the 5:00 PM, then type 3:00 P     and hit the tab key.  It will properly format the 3:00 P to 3:00 PM and will accept everything.
Given that people are migrating to 2010, I suspect this is one of those areas that people need to know about, as it probably won’t be fixed.   Thanks Again Larry for your assistance!!!
      Nell
