Hi- Going to be upgrading my (very) old MS Project Pro desktop standalone which has served me well. I’ll be working independently from home. I use MS Office 365 Home edition and do not have my own server. Which product should I choose if I service different companies, each with their own resource pool?
Note – My schedules may or may not identify resources, but having the capability to have a common resource pool per company and show demand across their projects would be a nice benefit, but not totally necessary.
My Questions: If I use the cloud-based online option, do I still need to purchase the on premise 2019Pro? And will my MS Office 365 service act as a server to provide shared resource pool dashboards? Thanks!

Eric, great question. My answer is based on what I read in your question. You’re pretty good with Microsoft Project, which is required for shared resource pools so Plan 1 is out. Price may be a factor given that you have an old version.

I’ll start with your first question. The difference between Project 2019 Pro and Project Plan 3 is mostly a licencing difference. They are pretty much the same product. Plan 3 would continue to be enhanced but was very similar when Project 2019 first came out, still is, and unlikely to be enhanced that much…and both can connect to a Project Online server instance. Project 2019 Standard is much cheaper but cannot connect to Project Online, which brings me to your second question…server dashboards, which comes with Project Online. Neither product by itself will allow you to use Project Online as you need at least one Plan 5 account. It’s also a complex add-on and designed for a team. Hope all that makes sense.

So based on your question, I might recommend Project 2019 Standard. It’s your cheapest option and should server you for a long time to come. Hope that helps…
