I have a Ms project file in which every task has been assigned two or more resources. Each resource works combined and equally on the task and contribute to the total work amount of the task of that amount. for example: if resource a and b both work combined and individually each for 8 hrs a day on the task and the work done by the task on that day is also 8 HRS. HOW DO I GO ABOUT IT?

Set the task type to be Fixed Work. Add the Work column and enter the total amount of work you want for the task. Then you should be able to add resources as you need to using either the Resource Name column or Assign Resources dialog box.

      Not working yet.
I wanted that the actual work done by the task in MS Project be equal to the actual work done by the two resources individually. Right now it is being added , for example: Resource A,B and C all individually and combined work 1 day and so the actual work on the task is shown as 3 days. Whereas i want it to be shown as 1 day.

It is possible that you are confused with effort vs. duration but I’ll assume you understand and what you want is to split the work between the assigned resources. Set the task to task type fixed duration and effort driven selected. Assign the first resource, then assign the other resource(s). This will maintain the duration and split the effort between all assigned resources. So, a one day task will assign 1/3rd of the total hours to each resource. This will work but still depends on the details of what you are looking for. Hope that helps.

No,but I want is not for the time to be distributed among resources. Basically, I want the task time to be same as the time taken by each individual resource. If 3 resources take 1 day each to perform the task ,then the task work should show work as 1 hr rather than 3 hrs.

Let me put it this horses ,
I have an inventory of two types of resources, say horses and carts.

In a given task, I need an assembly of one horse and one cart to transport goods from point A to B.
Also let’s assume that either of the two alone cannot be used.

In such a scenario, the time for which a horse and a cart is used for a particular task would be the same I.e. 2 days. When I attempt to record the actual work for both these resources, it should show the same time consumed for the horse and the cart.

Currently, I am getting the actual work split up in to 1 day each, which simply isn’t the case for the task mentioned above.

Hope this gives you a better picture of my problem.

Task work is the total of assignment work. It sounds like what you are looking for is task duration. Try entering duration in hours and see if that works for you. Sorry, you can’t add 8 plus 8 and get 8.

      Okay,Thanks.
And how can I calculate the idle time of any task or resource?

Multiple ways to determine idle time but much depends on how your resources estimate. If they are estimating true productive time than two ways to calculate idle time is to reduce max units or reduce hours per week. For instance, if they say that they can only be productive 6 hours per day than you can set max units to 75% or reduce hours/day to 6. Hope that helps…

      Yes, thanks for your help.
I basically wanted to know which column should i add around the tasks to know the idle time. Also is there by any way i can merge the cells in MS Project.

Neeraj, I’m wondering if I’m really answering your questions. Idle time as I understood the question is all about resources and difficult to reflect in a task view such as the Gantt chart. In response to your second sentence, yes you can merge cells by using a custom field and the concatenate formula, but this won’t help with understanding idle time (as I described it) as it is not entered in a separate field. I hope this helps, but try to describe the problem you are trying to solve if it doesn’t.
