I’m working with a supplier schedule that is in MSP 2003, all tasks have a task type of Fixed Duration and logically linked. We are seeing tasks with a split starting part way through the duration of the task and the split (dotted line) visable in the Gantt view until the complete date. Some tasks show the split and some don’t. I don’t understand what criteria is being applied to show some as split. The tasks that do have the split may be in-progress or complete. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?
      Thanks

      Hi Gene-
Just to confirm, are you saying that you see scheduled work split on the Gantt chart?  Or actual progress that reflects a split in the middle of the task?

The split is showing up on the Gantt chart. I’ve attached a copy of what the Gantt looks like and some other key fields. It may help in understanding what I’m trying to describe.

      Gene,
Yes the dotted lines show a split in task work.  It represents a time within the duration where there is no work.  In the example you show I see where the task work is completed before the task duration (tasks 1654 and 1655).  Task 1609 is an example of non-contingent actual work that was applied which leaves a gap within the duration.
To fix the first issue I suggest not using fixed duration task type.  Fixed work and fixed units allow Microsoft Project to flex the finish date/duration to match work applied.  the second situation displays as designed.  It can be changed but a bit tricky.
It depends on what you want to do with these situations.  Hope that helps, and let us know if you would like additional information.

I agree that the dotted lines show a split in the work but this schedule has no work assignments. All the tasks have a task type of Fixed Duration and some show a split and some don’t. That’s what I’m trying to explain. Why some are split and some aren’t.
I agree with you and I would have set the type to Fixed Work or Fixed Units. I recommended using Fixed Work to the supplier. And yes it can be tricky making that sort of change. Another option is change the bar format setting to not show the dotted lines.
      Thanks

      Gene,
Yes you are right and I didn’t look close enough to the sample you provided (I hate it when that happens).  It appears that someone has made changes to the bar styles.  Something certainly has been done as it shows a multiple gantt view that has been changed from the traditional Tracking Gantt.  Does the Gantt Chart view show the same thing?  If so can you show an out of box Gantt Chart view or Tracking Gantt?
Just some thoughts.  Can’t be sure of anything anymore (fooled me once and all), but I’m confident that someone has made changes to the bar styles.
I certainly hope that helps, but I will continue to monitor this thread.  If it doesn’t is there a way to send a partion plan?
