I would like to use Project for developing project estimates based on (internal) costs, but also reflecting price, overhead, profit and breakeven analysis.  Has anyone gone down this road already?  What conclusions or solutions have been reached?

      Hi Gary,
This can be done in Project by using the existing cost and baseline fields as well as setting up some of your own custom fields.  Depending on your need, it may be beneficial to use the Portfolio features of Project Server since these might be “proposals” rather than “projects”.

      Collin,
Thanks much for your reply.  How would you incorporate the baseline?  Would you use BL0 to hold the cost basis and BL1 to hold the price info?  Are you aware of any example templates that anyone has set up for this?
I don’t believe our organization is ready for Project Server yet, though it’s interesting that to note that their may be provision for development of proposals.
      Thanks again for your time,
      Gary

Gary, in your Resource Sheet, add 2 number fields.  Keep the internal rates in one and the external rates in the other.  Then, copy one of those fields into the Rate field to get project costs the way you want them on the Cost table.

      Oliver,
Thank you for your reply.  I’ll give this a try.
The Std. Rate field is time-phased and defaults to hourly.  Does you know of a way to force the Std. Rate field to default to daily?  In our industry, we incur most costs and charge out on a daily basis for same.
Also, do you know of a way to force the entire daily cost to be applied in the case of partial days on the schedule?  I’ve tried using Accrue at Start, but this doesn’t give the desired result.
      Thanks again for your time,
      Gary
