In Project 2007 whenever I zero out a resource on a task that has not yet started it changes the resource start date to the end of the previous day and thereby changes the start of the task as well. For example if I have a task that has a 1 day duration with a start and finish date of 1/28/11 and I zero out one of the resources in that task it changes the start date to 1/27/11 but leaves the duration at 1 and the finish date at 1/28/11. I’m not sure why it does that and the only way round this seems to be to either delete the resource completely or put in a low hour figure such as .02 to “anchor” the resource in place. Deleting the resource is not ideal since I need to keep track of my baselined hours and having .02 hours throughout my schedule is not ideal either. Has anyone experienced a similar situation and what did you do to get around it? I would like to be able to leave zero hours for a resource without it changing the start date.

To replicate the problem I’m having first select any task (except the first task) that has not yet started (0% Complete) and also has resources assigned. Make sure that the constraint type is As Soon As Possible. Then select one of the resources in that task and change the Work to zero hours. You will see the start date change to the previous day but the duration and finish day will not. I’m using the standard calendar.

Here is a more detailed instruction of how to replicate the problem:
      1) Create a new blank schedule
      2) Make sure that the “Calculate” function in “Options” is set to Automatic or On (if you are using 2010).
      3) Create two tasks
      4) Make them 1 day durations
      5) Link them sequentially (Finish to Start)
      6) Put in two dummy resources in each task and if you are using Fixed Units put 100% or if you are using Fixed Duration put 8 hours.
      7) Make sure that you dont type in any dates and thereby create a “Start No Earlier than Constraint.” All tasks need to be set to “As Soon As Possible.”
      8) Now go back to the second task and make the 8 hours of work for one of your resources zero.
      9) You should see the start date of the second task change so that it matches the finish date of the first task. Basically the dates show it as being a two day task but the duration remains as 1 day.
Any help in resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated. I cant imagine that I’m the only one experiencing it.
